Biography: Hennie Marsh

Artist Statement

Over the past ten years my work has become increasingly exploratory and abstract. Like most artists I started with consistently representational work: portraits, landscapes and still lifes. It seemed to me that these pictures were too definitive; I wanted to create work that was more open ended and presented viewers with numerous options in regard to their response. Rather than music with lyrics, I want to produce "instrumental art". I do present a mood and direction but I strive to leave some calm mystery and room for consideration. For the most part my work is abstract representational. I am also intrigued by iconic forms - these are evident in the bas relief work I create. My relief work is highly textured and mimics stone or wood.

Most of my formal art education has been at Queen's University and St. Lawrence College in Kingston. More recently I have attended the Provincetown Museum and Art School (MA) and am being currently being mentored by Megan Hinton, an artist and instructor in Provincetown. Jonas Gerard (Asheville NC), Ben Darrah, and Jennifer Lawton (ON) have all been recent guides in my development.

In July of this year I participated in a group show ("eee show") in Kingston that featured 5 local artists with Ben Darrah curating. February 2009, another group show "Black Madonnas" Sandra Whitton Gallery, Kingston. In March 2007 I was in a 2 artist show with Sally Chupick at Frameworks Gallery in Kingston. I submit to the annual KAC Juried Arts Salon every spring and have had several pieces selected. I have had numerous informal solo shows at my home studio and at LSP Designs in Kingston. I am a regular contributor to Art for Heritage, St Georges Church, Kingston ON and Parks Canada Call to Artists, Art in the Park, Mallorytown ON.
